The professional track and field season is shifting into high gear as of April 3, 2026. The 2026 Wanda Diamond League circuit is set to begin on May 8 in Doha, while major schedule changes have been confirmed for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Diamond League: 2026 Season Outlook

The 17th edition of the Diamond League features 15 meetings across four continents, culminating in a two-day final in Brussels. 

  • Upcoming Season Opener: The circuit kicks off in Doha on May 8, 2026.
  • Star Matchups Announced:
    • Noah Lyles (Olympic 100m champion) has confirmed he will headline the 100m at the Paris (June 28) and Rome (June 4) meetings.
    • Julien Alfred and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will face off in a high-stakes women’s 200m in Rome on June 4.
    • Josh Kerr is targeting a world record in the mile at the London meeting.
    • Mondo Duplantis is already committed to competing in at least seven events across the circuit this year.
  • New Talent: 17-year-old world indoor champion Cooper Lutkenhaus is set to make his professional Diamond League debut in Stockholm on June 7. 

Olympic News: Los Angeles 2028 Updates

Organizers have revealed significant shifts for the 2028 Games to accommodate the unique venue logistics in Los Angeles. 

  • Historical Schedule Flip: For the first time, track and field will open the Olympics, traditionally the spot held by swimming.
  • Triple-Header Challenge: In a major change for the women’s 100m, athletes will be required to run the prelims, semifinals, and the final all on Day 1 (July 15, 2028).
  • Qualification is Live: The qualifying window for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials officially opened in September 2025, with new performance and course standards now in effect. 

Right Now: Early Outdoor Season (April 2026)

While the professional global circuit starts in May, several high-profile meets are currently underway: 

  • Active Meets: The Florida Relays and Stanford Invitational are taking place today, April 3, through tomorrow, April 4.
  • World Rankings: Fresh off the World Indoor Championships in Poland (March 20–22), collegiate and professional athletes are transitioning to outdoor qualifying for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest this September.
